Hillary? Barack? Mitt? Why do we choose a candidate?

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

I usually steer clear of politics at the Landing, but I heard something today that disturbed me somewhat. First, in the interest of disclosure, you should know that I am pretty much a liberal democrat. That being said, I was listening to NPR’s reports on the New Hampshire primary today. Since Hillary Clinton won, they were interviewing numerous supporters. The part that disturbed me was there were several who said that their reason for supporting Hilary was that she was a woman. I have heard this quite a bit before, but I never really thought about it that much. I have heard similar sentiments about Barack Obama. There are people who say they are voting for him because he is African American.

My question is, doesn’t this sound like racism/sexism? If someone were to say ‘I am voting for Huckabee because he is a man.’, he would be critisized and I believe rightly so. If someone were to say they were going to vote for Romney because he was white, that would be racism. Neither of these people are talking about issues, they are talking about the race and sex of the candidates, something which doesn’t matter. It’s the same thing with voting for Hilary or Barack because of their sex/race.

Is this really the message we want to send? Both of these candidates have tremendous records, great ability and firm stances on the issues? We are choosing the person who will lead the free world for four years. If you believe in their ability to lead or agree with their stance on the issues, then great! Vote one of them. Hell, I am. I think either one of them is a great choice. But don’t belittle the candidates, the process or the country that they are going to lead by picking a candidate because of their race/sex.
